BUSD Labor Negotiations Need Resolution

[AN OPEN LETTER TO THE BERKELEY SCHOOL BOARD]

8 May 2013

School Board Directors

BUSD Director Vacancy Applications

In March, 2013, Leah Wilson resigned her seat on the Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) Board of Directors. On March 27, 2013, the remaining Board members guided by BUSD staff developed a process to fill the vacancy. Details of the process are available on the District website. In accordance with this process, the applications for the Directors appointment were submitted by April 15 and made available to the public on April 19, though BUSD was not making them available online.

School Board Election Results

With essentially all the votes in Berkeley counted, the indication is that Judy Appell will be joining the re-elected Beatriz Leyva-Cutler and the three incumbent members to form the new Berkeley School Board. Congratulations to Judy and Beatriz. The new board will be constitued at the first meeting in 2013. SInce there are four of the five current members continuing on the Board, there should be little interruption of actions important to our schools, the most critical being the hiring of a new superintendent to lead BUSD.

PTA Council Endorses Measures O/N

Yes on Measures O and N

The Berkeley PTA Council is proud to endorse Berkeley measures N and O to return our much needed pools to the community. Our pools are an important asset to the Berkeley community, especially for our kids and their families. We believe that these measures will help improve the conditions of our pools, including restoring Willard Pool. In a community with few places where families can go to have some healthy fun, Measure N and O will ensure our pools will be improved and restored now and for future generations.

Dr. Heatley Withdraws from Consideration for Superintendent

As reported earlier on BerkeleySide, Dr. Edmond Heatley sent a letter to the Berkeley School Board informing them of his withdrawl as a candidate for Superintendent of Berkeley Schools. Dr. Heatley took the right step as it became obvious that positions he has taken in the past are in stark contrast to those of the Berkeley community. This action does not lessen the concern about a process which almost hired a candidate without finding such a basic difference in views.

Offer to Edmond T. Heatley for Superintendent of BUSD

[The following message was sent to each of the current Berkeley School Board members and the acting Superintendents]

As President of the Berkeley PTA Council, I write to express a strong concern voiced by our members about the selection of Mr. Heatley as Superintendent of the Berkeley Unified School District.

While there have been some concerns raised about his qualifications, this mornings news reports that he actively supported passage of Proposition 8, an objectionable act which invalidates the loving relationship of many of our families, should cause you to immediately terminate plans to offer him this role. If true, and it should be fairly easy to confirm with the Chino Valley School District, this would call into question his ability to build relationships with the diverse families of our schools community, thus, the effectiveness as a superintendent in Berkeley.

The fact that such an important fact was not found in his vetting to date also raises many questions about the process you have taken in recruiting a new Superintendent. We are very concerned that our families have NOT had an active voice in the process, have had limited consultation, and almost no information as the process developed. We hope that you will be more active in your consultation with our families and offer the PTA as one of the
avenues to accomplish this.

We look forward to a full investigation of these reports and what actions will be taken based on the findings.

With Best Regards - Tom Killilea / President, Berkeley PTA Council
